THE RETURN OF THE PERM

A frizzy perm? We swore we’d never go back. And yet, the iconic 80s style has returned with a vengeance.

Sleek, shiny manes are a thing of the past (for now) – the new it-girl hairstyle channels the voluminous frizz of 80s pop stars. Yes, the ultra-curly perm is back and it’s being seen on the likes of Emma Stone, Blake Lively and Taylor Swift, as well as on the catwalks of recent fashion weeks.

Fortunately, we’ve come a long way since the 1980s and people are taking better care of their hair, meaning that many are opting for the perm look, but with a less damaging chemical process. “Thio-free” perms mirror the perming process, but don’t contain the harmful ingredient known as thioglycolic acid, which causes damage to hair follicles (and also just smells really bad). Instead, these perms use an ingredient known as cysteamine, which breaks down hair bonds while causing less damage – though, admittedly, they don’t last as long as traditional perms.
